Highland Charter Public School opened its doors in August 1997 as one of the first charter schools in North Carolina.  Highland Charter provides expanded learning experiences for Kindergarten-4th Grade students.  The regular education program integrates curricular, instructional and organizational practices so that they provide enrichment to maximize student achievement across the curriculum.  Our goal is to dramatically impact teaching and learning in the earliest grades where the foundation for future learning is truly established.

The mission of Highland Charter Public School is to be a family friendly school that enhances the learning community, expands educational choice and increases learning opportunities for all children.  Our main goal is to help all students be successful by improving their lives through learning.  We want our students to learn the information, skills, and values that will help them live productively and responsibly.  We also want our students to achieve their highest potential and develop personal responsibility and self-control, and to solve problems by talking them through.  We use the Quality School model developed by Dr. William Glasser as the framework and vehicle to achieve our mission.

Highland Charter is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school.  The STEM-focused curriculum helps students understand our world, solve problems and think critically.

Open enrollment for 2011-2012 school year ends April 21, 2011; the lottery will be conducted at the May 5, 2011 Gaston Community Action, Inc. Board of Directors meeting.  Enrollment applications are available at Head Start Centers throughout Gastonia, at the Choice Center (314 N Highland Street, Gastonia, NC) and at the school.  For more information about Highland Charter Public School call the school at 704-866-6342 or visit our website at www.highlandcharter.org .
