Gaston Community Action, Inc
Gaston Community Action, Inc. is a private
non-profit corporation charter by the State of North Carolina
to operate anti-poverty programs in Gaston County on October
22, 1964.
The agenecy administers programs in Gaston, Lincoln, Stanly,
and Cleveland Counties funded by the US Department of Health
and Human Services; North Carolina Department of Commerce
Energy Division; North Carolina Department of Natural Resources;
Community Development Division of Economic Opportunity; and
the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. GCA employs
a staff of 143 and operates on an annual budget of over $6.4
million.

The agency has
continuously provided services and advocy in behalf of the poor
and disadvantaged since its inception and charter. Head Start
educates more than 600 preschool children in Gaston and Lincoln
Counties. Community Services Block Grant is directed toward
making low-income residents of the four counties self-sufficient
by providing help with employment, housing, education and transportation.
The Weatherization program installs permanent insulating materials
in homes of the elderly, handicapped, and low-income persons.
Highland Charter Public School combines the latest educational
techniques with a child-centered atmosphere and family support
services to create a unique learning environment for up to 125
children.

The Board of Directors is comprised of 15 members representing
three sectors: public (appointed by the county commissioners),
citizen (elected by the low-income residents), and private
(appointed by civic groups). Each sector has five representatives.
